An innovative project was designed by the Infant & Junior Schools and Murude Mehmet from the Parental Engagement Team in 2011.
This project encourages parents to contribute to the schools Curriculum through creative workshops, which will be delivered by the parents who have accessed the art and craft workshops.
The first project was attended by 12 parents who completed a five-week course learning the art of silk painting. The parents were able to facilitate and transfer their skills to years 2 & 3 children in a planned constructed lessons in creating dinosaurs and Olympic 2012-coin artwork alongside the class teachers and teaching assistants.
Since 2011, we have introduced Glass Painting, Fabric & Mosaic Art. Some of the art work the children and parents have produced is displayed in both schools, which includes, Lion King Mosaic Art in the Infant School Reception Area, Glass Painting
depicting Poppy Artwork for Remembrance Day in the Infants Corridor, Mosaic Art depicting The Solar System in the Year 6 Corridor and Our Local Area in the Main Hall located in the Junior School. We were also privileged to have displayed our Learn Some Teach Some art work twice at the Canary Wharf Group Community Window in Canada Square, Canary Wharf E14.
It was really rewarding to be able to learn a skill and pass on what you have learnt to the children “we felt proud”
It was a confidence boost!
All the children cheered! they were all looking forward to the next lesson they did not want to stop!
The project has gone from strength to strength with new parents joining each year. Some of the parents who have volunteered their time with this project, are now in employment which includes, Teaching Assistants, Midday Meal Supervisors, School Volunteers, School Governors, Play Workers, Self Employed, Higher Education and Volunteer Roles in the local community.
Being a parent is hard work! Would you like help and support to make being a parent/carer a little easier?
